About GISACP2e

The first edition of GIS: A Computing Perspective was written by Mike Worboys in 1995 and has become a highly respected and standard text for GIS students and professionals alike (see some reviews of the book). In 2004, Mike Worboys and Matt Duckham published an extensively revised and thoroughly updated edition that reflects the latest developments within the field at the same time as retaining the core of tried and tested material.

A summary of main changes to the second edition are listed below. Alternatively you can view the preface to the second edition in pdf format, which includes a more detailed introduction to the book.

  • The entire book has been completely reformatted and typeset.
  • Chapters 1-6 have been extensively revised and updated.
  • Chapters 7-10 present almost entirely new material, covering GIS architectures, GIS user interfaces, uncertainty in geospatial information, and spatiotemporal information systems (view the book contents).
  • The bibliography, index, and all the diagrams have been completely revised. You can view the index in pdf format.
  • Key terms and definitions are highlighted the margin for easy reference (see an example in pdf format. These terms are cross-referenced and highlighted in bold in the index (see above).
  • More challenging material that is relevant to the main themes of the text, but not essential to the reader, is included in gray inset boxes at the top of a page. You can view an example inset box in pdf format.
  • The book has been rewritten for an international audience using standard American English.
  • This website has been developed to accompany the book, offering a variety of resources.
You can download sample material from the book by following the link from the resources page
