Doctoral Colloquium

Sunday, September 23, 2001

Organized and Moderated by:  Anthony Richardson, UCSB (a_richar@psych.ucsb.edu)

The Doctoral Colloquium at COSIT is an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present their research to an audience of other students and faculty from other institutions.  The research typically comes from one's doctoral dissertation, but any research that is topically appropriate for COSIT may be presented as long as the student is the primary author of the work.  The goal of the Colloquium is to give students experience presenting research in a public forum, and to give them feedback on their research and presentation.  It will also provide an opportunity for students and faculty to share insights on how to do a Ph.D. in an interdisciplinary field.  Students and faculty will provide feedback on issues such as how to pick and refine research questions, how to gather and analyze research results, how to orally present research, how to publish research, how to get support for research, and so on.

Each participant will briefly present his or her work, both in writing (no more than two pages) and orally (10 minutes).  Presentations should address the following four points: research question, motivation, methods, and results.  Alternatively, you may present planned research or research that is not yet complete; in that case, methods and results should be intended or anticipated.

To participate at the Doctoral Colloquium, please indicate that on your registration form for the regular conference.  Alternatively, you may contact Anthony Richardson at any time before August 31 to sign up for the Colloquium.  Email him a copy of your written presentation no later than August 31, 2001.

All graduate students who meet the deadline, format, and topical requirements will be accepted to present.  Presenters at the Doctoral Colloquium are eligible to apply for an ESRI Student Award to help offset the cost of attending COSIT.
